Taking a scientific approach to cosmetic dentistry

While we recognise that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, we love to apply a scientific approach to dental cosmetics. We can apply detailed facial and dental standardised and proportional analysis to guide our treatment, as well as to demonstrate the available cosmetic treatment options.

It can be an incredible insight to see a three-dimensional computer model that show how your teeth will move throughout orthodontic treatment, or a photo-realistic render of what you could look like with veneers. It really makes us smile to embrace the latest cosmetic dental technology and use the highest standards of treatment planning and advanced digital techniques to our patients in Coffs Harbour.

Veneers

There are 2 types of veneers available; resin veneers or porcelain veneers. The information below will help you to understand the main differences between these options.

Direct Resin Veneers

  • Layered directly onto the tooth surface in a single appointment, usually without drilling of the tooth

  • Softer and more flexible 

  • Need to be professionally polished more frequently (we recommend at least once per year) 

  • $400 – $500 / tooth

Porcelain Veneers

  • Bonded to the tooth like a false nail

  • Requires removal of some tooth structure (less than 1mm) and two separate appointments

  • Made of hard porcelain, so generally strong and stain resistant

  • $1300 – $1400 / tooth

Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the process of moving the position, and aligning your teeth. Unlike veneers, where either ceramic or composite resin is bonded to your tooth structure, if it’s possible to achieve an aesthetic result by straightening your natural teeth this is often a very good option.

The two main ways to align teeth are the traditional brackets and wire technique, or the more modern clear aligner or Invisalign technique. Both options can provide excellent treatment outcomes, with the major differences relating to comfort, maintenance, and the appearance throughout treatment.

Tooth Whitening

Tooth whitening or bleaching is one of the most common and popular cosmetic dental procedures, and it can be a great way to improve the confidence of your smile.

Over the course of our lives, as we eat and drink certain foods, tiny staining compounds can build up on the surface of our teeth. If it’s superficial, a good clean with a dentist or hygienist can remove this stain, however because our enamel is porous at a microscopic level, these staining compounds can embed themselves more deeply into our tooth structure.

Tooth whitening agents are types of peroxide, that can break up these staining compounds and remove them from our tooth structure, causing our teeth to look white again.

There are two main ways to whiten teeth; in the clinic under the supervision of a dentist, or at home using whitening trays. It’s effectively the same process, but in the clinic we can use higher concentrations of bleach to make the process faster and more efficient. However it can be more cost effective to use the home bleaching method, and most people still find that this approach is easy and hassle free.
