A chat with our new dentist - Dr. James Taylor

Dr. James Taylor will be joining our clinical team this June. He spent his childhood in Dorrigo and now looks forward to moving back to his hometown. James comes with a broad range of experience over the last 10 years. This includes his training, as well as, working as a dentist in regional NSW. He has experience in large regional centres plus more remote work as part of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

During this time, James has honed his skills in all areas of general dentistry. He can provide examinations, fillings, extractions, crown and bridge work, children's dentistry and preventative procedures. Part of his passion for dentistry comes from the variety of experiences it brings. Particularly the opportunity to get people out of pain, and improve their confidence, and overall health. We asked James to share some information, stories and personal interests so you can learn more about our newest team member.

  1. What was the best thing about growing up in Dorrigo and what is it drawing you back to the region?

The Dorrigo lifestyle is unmatched. I have really enjoyed my time in Tamworth and Western NSW, but nothing quite compares to the rolling green hills and clean mountain air of Dorrigo. It is a fantastic small community in an unbeatable location. It is still close to the coast but has prime farmland.

Growing up in and be a part of the Dorrigo community was a privilege. Now I'm excited to return and provide dental health care to the community that supported me through my youth. I can't think of a better place for my wife and I to raise our family. I guess that's why they call it God's Country!

  2.  When and where did you graduate, and what was the best thing about that training experience?

After leaving Dorrigo High School, I graduated from Charles Sturt University in 2015. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to work in many regional towns during my studies. These included Wagga Wagga , Bathurst, Orange, Dubbo, Port Macquarie, Brewarrina, as well as, Lightning Ridge and Bourke as part of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The program was aimed at getting more dentists into regional NSW and preparing graduates to work in these communities. I am so grateful for my experiences at university as I made great mates and now have both social and professional contacts all around the state.

  3. What would you want to contribute to Dorrigo being part of the health team there?

First and foremost, I want to provide high quality dentistry to the Dorrigo area. Being a small town, I am very familiar with many members of the community already. This only encourages me more to provide the highest level of care I can offer. Too often oral health is overlooked as an important part of general health. So I hope to return and play an integral part of a greater healthcare team to promote a high level of health in the region. I hope to play an active role in the community not only as a healthcare provider but also as a citizen of the town.

  4. What do you enjoy outside of dentistry?

Apart from dentistry my other two big passions are my family and my cattle. My wife and I studied together at university. We then moved to Tamworth where we got engaged, bought our first house and were later married. Last year we were very proud to have welcomed our first child who is very special to us.My other passion is my stud Gelbvieh cattle. I started the stud and began showing cattle in Dorrigo when I was 14. I had bought some heifers with money I had saved from spud picking. We now have a small herd on our little block in Dorrigo and it is a lifetime dream coming true..
